We are between seasons here at Little Gnesta B & B. Despite freezing temperatures, Occupy Wall Street’s 99% were seen on Newport’s Main St. today and the behind them, Lake Memphremagog was sparkling in the sunlight. It seems like a good day to look back to summer since there’s not enough snow to ski yet and the trails and roads are too slick for hiking and biking.

August in the Northeast Kingdom means that Bread and Puppet: Cheap Art and Political Theater, just down the road in Glover, stages free performances each Sunday in August. If you’ve never seen it, you’ve been missing out on a truly unique experience. Dubbed “guerrilla theater” by some, the performance takes place in a naturally occurring amphitheater on the Bread and Puppet property. This year the performance was called Man=Carrot and it was a wild and raucous affair that amazingly made sense despite the unusual title.

Glover is just  a short drive from Little Gnesta B & B and we made it to the outdoor performance as well as one inside  Bread and Puppet’s Papier Mache Cathedral during Hurricane Irene! Our photos begin to but can’t totally illustrate how wacky and fun a Bread and Puppet performance is. The museum, while there, is also a must-see and has the puppets in diorama-like set-ups going back to the 1960s.
