Reviewed June 15, 2013 NEW We had a lovely time at this inn. The Scandinavian decor is ravishingly fresh

homemade bread, preserves, and granola, as well as delicious local cheese and

Reviewed June 10, 2013 NEW My girlfriend and I spent a night in mid-May for a little R&R. What a great spot! Our room was very clean and bright andRuth was an excellent host. Breakfast the following morning was great as well. I wish we had more time to spend there than 1 night…perhaps next time!
Reviewed June 8, 2013 NEW Although we only stayed for one night, we felt welcome and had a pleasant time chatting with Ruth and the other guests. We had a comfortable sleep and had everything we needed. We were in the Umea room that sat next to the roadway which, although a “secondary” street was surprisingly busy/noisy on this Saturday night. Not enough to completely deprive us from sleep but perhaps if you’re looking for a quieter room, look for those in the back. The breakfast was of good quality and variety, but a little minimalist which fits well with the mood or “motto” of the Inn, but you should be aware in case you’re expecting one of those B&B with a huge plate.
It’s a great location with many things to do, and nice places to eat out too. We hope to be able to go back and stay longer to enjoy it to its fullest.
I agree and understand why many people rate it 5 stars, I just personally don’t beleive in giving 5 stars unles there’s really something amazing or exceptional that makes a place feel like “one in a million” (it’s a personal thing). So my 4 stars should still be seen as a “trop-notch, would visit again” rating. If there was a 4.5 option, that’s what I woul’ve picked. I recommend it 100%.

The bed/bath-rooms are very cozy, bright, clean, newly remodeled, and charming. The breakfast was delicious! Ruth was so accommodating in every way! When we asked if we could have coffee before the race, she offered us bananas and went out of her way to make us feel at home and prepared to run. Reviewed May 19, 2013 NEW My husband and I were down here from Toronto for a cycling trip over the May long weekend and we couldn’t have been happier with our stay. We chose this as a home base and did different routes each day. Ruthie is an amazing hostess, the rooms are very clean and super comfortable, the breakfasts are perfect – lots of goodies from the local markets and some home made bread – and the location is quaint and relaxing. After a long day of cycling through northern Vermont’s tough and hilly terrain, it was just what we needed. The house is beautiful, newly renovated and very bright, and there are a lot of great places to eat nearby. We definitely plan to come back for another cycling trip next year.

Several years ago, our “regular place” closed, and it has been hard to find a new “home away from home”. It looks like this may be “the one”. Attention to detail was outstanding, the breakfast was absolutely top notch with local, healthy, organic fare, and the innkeeper immediately seemed like a long lost friend. Newport is a little bit of a drive from our ski destination, Jay Peak, but it is a great place to stay, and seems like it would be very nice in summer as well. In fact, I plan on returning then, based on all of the things Ruth told us about the area in summer.

Before arriving, I informed Ruth that my wife is gluten free, and she was most accommodating. She went out of her way to find out about what she could serve and made sure my wife had a good breakfast.

Ruth, the proprietress, is lovely and the B&B defies the typical. This is stylish and comfortable, with great bedding and delicious breakfasts. There’s nothing twee or cutesy-country here. The Swedish theme gives Gnesta a sense of style imbued in the details. Oh, and sleeping in our bed was great, the bedding was a delight and made coming home even more of a disappointment. And, the bath after a day of skiing was perfect. It’s refreshing to see someone pay such attention to every element of her inn with such care. We will definitely return.

Reviewed November 30, 2012This is the place to stay in Newport and surroundings. We checked out other B&B’s and inns and my daughter who lives in the area, visited several of them. Our stay at Little Gnesta convinced us we made the right decision. Our room was the Are, downstairs and next to the dining room. We never heard anyone and slept like babies. The room was huge with a nice size bathroom. Lots of windows for which the draperies and black-out shades gave us absolute dark and privacy whenever we wanted. Wonderful comfortable bed although a tight fit for the person sleeping on the wall side.
Our only issue was that the wi-fi system was failing while we were there. It was very slow and intermittent. Ruth was trying to fix the system and hopefully got it back to full capacity after we left.

Breakfast consisted mainly of locally-sourced items, from fresh-baked bread to cheese and yogurt to even the serving dish for the butter! The homemade fruit spreads and granola were delicious as well, all served in a sun-drenched dining room. We were also welcomed to store snacks from the natural grocer or restaurant leftovers in the fridge–a privilege I’ve never had at any other B&B.
What really makes Little Gnesta special is the proprietor, Ruth. She had seemingly endless recommendations for activities in the area (with books stocked in the common room providing details). She recommended a great kayaking excursion, a beautiful hike, and spot-on restaurant recommendations. We were only sorry that our stay was too short to engage in all the activities the area has to offer! We immediately added it to our itinerary. We loved everything about this simple, clean, restful little oasis in the middle of a somewhat depressed but beautiful lakeside “city” literally on Vermont’s Canadian boarder. Every detail perfectly blends modern and traditional, old and new, a crisp yet comfortable environment making for a peaceful and relaxing sojourn. Breakfast was delicious satisfying and healthy featuring Ruth’s homemade rhubarb jam and granola, local artisan cheeses, yogurt, breads and coldcuts. We also enjoyed the other guests and Ruth was helpful, accommodating and informative. We’ll definitely return and already telling all our friends.

My husband and I were very skeptical about this place at first since we are very picky people – but we were in for a huge surprise, not just on how immaculate the little “gnesta” (so true to its name) was, but also with how pleasant and open the hostess “Ruth” was … she made it all so easy and comfortable … the rooms are beautiful … loved the Scandivanian theme … her breakfasts were healthy and delicious and we made friends chatting over breakfast because the ambience is indeed a home away from home, you don’t feel like you are here with strangers. In fact, its a welcome change from typical wet, smelly ski resorts … its a little bit of a drive to Jay Peak but honestly is absolutely worth it!!! No doubt in my mind – we’re going back there!!!

We stayed at Little Gnesta for one night in March on our way up to Quebec City. It is quite charming. Having spent some time in Sweden, we appreciated Ruth’s creation of a place full of Gustavian touches. The breakfast table was beautifully set, and the food was terrific. Ruth is both down-to-earth and sophisticated, and is full of ideas for things to do, restaurants, etc. There is good cross-country skiing nearby. We’d certainly stay again.

We were upgraded to a bigger room – but all of the rooms are spacious and impeccably appointed with a modern Swedish style – clean, warm and inviting. The windows look out over the town of Newport and the rooms are flooded with light. The beds are the real treat! Simply the highest end bed I have ever slept in – imported from Sweden, the bed’s combination of foam, NZ wool and construction allowed me to wake up feeling calm and ready for the day. Incredible! We also were so pleased that Ruth uses duvets on her beds so we felt right at home.
The generous breakfast was filled with all local items, many organic (five stars for that!)homemade granola (she gave me the recipe!) and the fresh bread, cold cuts, wide selection of jams and cheeses were absolutely delicious! We skipped lunch it was so filling.
The sitting rooms and shared areas are beautifully furnished with comfortable seating and an array of books. Wifi is super fast – and the television has more than what we would use, includes netflix and the TV is big enough for me!
The bathrooms are spotless with a wide array of locally made soaps, natural body lotions, spa towels, and a tiled shower which was beautiful. No complaints anywhere, from the clean floors (no outdoor shoes allowed, but thank you for providing indoor slippers for your guests!) to the sparkling personality of it’s hostess, Ruth and Little Gnesta will be our home away from home in the Northeast Kingdom. Newport is a sweet little town with much to offer – from the beautiful lake to walking trails, you can hop over to Montreal quickly or ski up at Jay peak and still enjoy the quiet of this little town.

Reviewed August 30, 2011We arrived on a Monday for a two day getaway in northern Vermont. Ruth, our hostess, greeted us with bubbly good cheer and quickly got us settled in. The inn is in a lovingly restored Victorian in a neighborhood a five minute walk from downtown and the lake. The room was lovely in its Scandinavian inspired simplicity, and the bed was to die for (it was an import from Sweden, and just as comfortable as my Tempurpedic back home). We looked across the roofs of Newport to a tiny glimpse of the lake. Breakfast was proudly presented: there were two kinds of breads from a local bakery (wonderful!), a selection of Scandinavian cheeses (try the brown Norwegian cheese; don’t let the color put you off, it’s really awesomely smooth and tasty), and the jams are either homemade or locally made. There is also fruit, yogurt, and granola. A great start to the day. And Ruth is just the soul of hospitality. We chatted at length about her restoration of the inn, about her journey to this chapter in her life (the inn just opened this past May), and she was extremely helpful with suggestions about things to do, etc. The northeast kingdom is much more lovely than I had ever imagined it. We’ll be back. Thanks Ruth for a lovely stay.

Reviewed August 19, 2011Perched on a gradually ascending hill leading up to the picturesque St. Mary Star of the Sea, a tall granite church, the Little Gnesta bed and breakfast stands out from its neighbors with its recently renovated exterior and well manicured front lawn/garden. Off street parking is included with your stay at the Little Gnesta, but parking around town appears to be free and plentiful. We found Newport to be a very walkable city, however, and you’ll probably want to park and leave your car at the house as we did.
Ruth, the proprietor and manager of the Little Gnesta, and Philip, Ruth’s canine companion and an absolute gentleman, met us at the door upon our arrival. Ruth was very welcoming, and recommended some fabulous places to visit in Newport and the surrounding area. Our first night she recommended the fabulous Lago Trattoria, an Italian restaurant in the heart of downtown. Our dinner at Lago was probably the best meal we had in Newport, so I would recommend it as well. Ruth let us store our bicycles in the garage behind the house at night, and during the day our bicycles were our primary mode of transportation if we were not walking.
The Gustavian style interior and furnishings of the house brightened our stay, and we particularly enjoyed learning more about Swedish interior design in the comfortable library. We stayed in the Åre room, which is located just off of the dining room on the first floor. The Carpe Diem beds can be best described as dangerously comfortable. After kayaking all morning on Saturday, we returned to the Little Gnesta to change for our bike trip to Quebec, and the Carpe Diem bed coerced us into taking a multiple hour nap in the middle of the day. It was just that comfortable. The rest of the Åre room was well-appointed, and the air conditioner was a perfect supplement to one particularly muggy July night.
I cannot stress enough how helpful Ruth was during our trip. She knows the area quite well, and even directed us to the secluded Big Falls State Park west of the city. If you blink, you’ll miss the entrance to this beautiful state park, which reminded me of similar formations on the north shore of Lake Superior in Minnesota. Ruth made our trip to Newport both a delightful and a memorable one.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Little Gnesta and we look forward to our next visit, perhaps sometime in the winter to try skiing at the nearby Jay Peak. If you are looking for a quiet and relaxing place to stay in the North East Kingdom, you should book your trip at the Little Gnesta Bed and Breakfast.

It has a peaceful, spa-like atmosphere. I came north for the Kingdom Run and brought a friend so we stayed in the room with twin beds. My bed, with the feather mattress, was literally the most comfortable bed on which I have slept in my entire life. The shower has such a soothing massage that it was hard to make oneself get out. Reviewed July 14, 2011 NEWLittle Gnesta is a Scandinavian inspired Bed & Breakfast located in the quaint northern Vermont town of Newport. We had travelled to Newport last year so my husband could compete in a swim on Lake Memphremagog, and we loved the town and the friendly locals. We had stayed at the Willowsby Inn, and we were neither impressed by the facilities (and the excessive cost considering the condition of our room — possibly one of the worst showers I’ve ever used aside from outdoor facilities one finds at beaches) nor happy with the distance we had to travel to get to Newport. Little Gnesta was suggested by the person running the swim.
The B&B is located a quick walk from downtown and to the lakefront, which has a lovely walkway along the water. This was terrific since my husband needed the car to get to the beach where the swim would begin and I had no desire to wake up at 5 a.m. to drive him there two mornings in a row.
The house is in a neighborhood that is slowly being gentrified, and Little Gnesta’s owner, Ruth, is a frontrunner in initiating improvements and change, both at her own business as well as being involved in helping Newport become even more of a welcome place for visitors. She personally did many of the renovations of her house, and she did them with thoughtfulness to her guests as well as to the environment. The result is a comfortable, clean and beautiful place. We loved the decor, which was both clean in style and in fact. I have stayed in all sorts of hotels, Inns and B&Bs, and I prefer an unfussy design that uses space effectively with an eye towards comfort. Size of my sleeping space matters less than how easy it is for me to get comfortable and stash my luggage and gear.
We were late in making our reservations, so we got the last of the 4 rooms, which the website describes as “cozy.” The room was rather small — maybe about the size of a college dorm room single. It had two twin beds, an antique icebox (as furniture), a basic 18″ bookshelf unit that ran floor to ceiling and one window. An air conditioning unit was located below the window, which was great since it did not block out the natural light. The bookcase was great for unpacking stuff we wanted quick access to, and our suitcases fit under the beds. One bed had a featherbed topper and the other a memory foam mattress. I chose the featherbed, and loved it. I also slept through all of the breakfasts that Ruth offered in the charming dining area. I assume my husband had a great sleep on the other bed — he fell asleep quickly and he went on to win his race. Our room did not have a television, but that did not bother either one of us. I understand that the other three rooms do have televisions as well as Netflix access. We did, however, much appreciate the wifi connection.
Although the room was small, we were only there for sleeping. If we had felt like we needed more space, Little Gnesta has a centrally located sitting room, which is stocked full of books. In addition, the kitchen, dining area and front porch were available for our use. We had a dedicated bathroom just across the hall from our room. It was beautifully appointed and large. I loved that she had wall hooks in multiple, commonsense, places throughout both the room and the bathroom.
Not only would I recommend Little Gnesta to even the pickiest of travelers, I wish more places would adopt the Swedish style for hospitality. I think that the somewhat overstuffed, overly cabbage-rosed bed and breakfast style often feels more like grandma’s yard sale than a thoughtfully decorated guest space. I am all for repurposing antique and vintage, but that does not mean it should be left broken or poorly maintained. Ruth has maintained the historic charm of her house while making it work for modern travelers. I especially admired how she refinished the hardwood floors.
Beyond my accolades regarding my stay at Little Gnesta, I was thoroughly impressed with our host, Ruth. She is the kind of broad-thinking business owner that any city would be fortunate to have as a citizen and cheerleader. She was very knowledgeable about the area, really seems to care about questions or concerns the guests may have (and immediately sets about making things right, even if the concern is not related to her business), and is a genuinely friendly and interesting person. We will definitely stay at Little Gnesta next year when we return for the Kingdom Swim.
